Why does your skin type matter? Simple – taking care of your skin starts with knowing your skin type. Understanding your facial skin type is important because this is the first step to establish your skincare routine and identify skincare products which are most suitable for you.

Skin types are commonly classified into four types – Normal, Oily, Dry and Sensitive. A fifth type is referred to as Combination, with different skin types in the T-Zone area and cheeks.

No matter which skin types, you can still have a great skin if you have a suitable skincare routine, use the most effective skincare products and adjust your lifestyle choices to benefit your complexion (and of course, your general health too!)

Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you are among the lucky ones! This is often called a well-balanced and healthy skin.  Normal skin has a soft, smooth texture and a blemish-free complexion. Your skin is neither too oily or dry, nor is it sensitive.

Your oil glands secrete the right amount of sebum which keeps your skin well-lubricated while providing an effective protection barrier to prevent excessive water loss and protect against external environmental factors. With normal skin, you should have a smooth, supple and glowing complexion. There is still a need to maintain a skincare routine to ensure that normal skin continues to be nourished.

Jill Lowe’s skincare products which are suitable for normal smooth skin include the Smooth Skin Cleanser, Smooth Skin Toner, Smooth Skin Hydrating Serum and Smooth Skin Amazing Booster

Oily Skin

Oily skin is due to an excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. The skin has visible pores, shiny-looking and feels greasy. The causes of excessive sebum include exposure to environment, genetics, life stresses, hormone imbalance, allergies or medications.

Oily skin is also often characterized by the presence of acne. The excessive sebum, dirt and grim in clogged pores lead to the build-up of bacteria resulting in acne breakouts and skin inflammation in severe cases. Skincare products suitable for oily skin include foaming cleansers, oil-free moisturisers, chemical exfoliants and oil-absorbent clay masks. In general, products that are oil-free and do not clog pores (non-comedogenic).

Jill Lowe’s products suitable for oily skin include the Skin Enzyme Cleanser, Skin Recovery Astringent and Pore Refiner. If you are acne-prone, the Acne Recovery Concentrate with its potent combination of Micro Silver, Azelamide MEA and Salicylic acid is the ideal treatment for acne.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is largely due to the skin producing less sebum, reducing the skin’s ability to retain moisture and provides an effective protective barrier against external environmental factors. Dry skin is also caused by a lack of natural moisturisng factors (NMFs) on the skin which helps to bind water to the skin.

Your skin feels dry with a rough texture, colour of the skin looks dull and with a tightness feeling especially after bath or cleansing. Skincare products suitable for dry skin include cream cleansers, hydrating boosters, rich moisturisers and face oils such as Jill Lowe’s Multi-Extracts Cleansing Oil, Skin Lifting Mist and Firming Booster.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin often suffers from skin irritations, redness or itchiness. Sensitive skin can be affected by allergies, exposure to external factors such as the sun or use of wrong type of skincare products. Skincare products suitable for sensitive skin include soothing and gentle cleansers, calming mist and soothing botanical oils with actives such as aloe vera and chamomile extracts. Jill Lowe’s products which are suitable for sensitive skin include the Skin Recovery Cleanser and Skin Recovery Soothing Mist.

Combination Skin

In combination, with different skin types in the T-Zone area and cheeks’ area. The T-zone area covers across the eyebrows, and down the nose to the chin. Combination skin is often characterized by an oily T-zone with normal or dry cheeks. Skincare products suitable for combination skin include balancing toners, spot treatments, blotting papers for greasy part of the skin and use of multiple masks.

Aging and Pigmented Skin

Don’t be confused – aging and pigmented skin are not skin types. It is a skin condition which comes with the natural aging process, in the case of pigmented skin, the cause is often due to sun exposure which leads hyperactivity in melanocytes cells which produce the pigment melanin.

Aging is a natural process, as we age the skin loses its volume, becomes thinner and less elastic. The skin shedding cycle becomes longer, leaving skin looking dull and less radiant. Exposure to the sun can accelerate the aging process, also leading changes in pigmentation with the formation of age and dark spots.

Jill Lowe’s skincare products ideal for mature aging and pigmented skin include Collagen DNA, E-Pigment, C-Miracle, Pure Skin Energizer and Whitening Concentrate.
